About us
TAIAO is a data science programme funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment, which aims to improve the accessibility and usability of environmental data for researchers, scientists, and the wider community.
The programme is a collaboration between several universities and organisations, including the Universities of Waikato, Auckland, Canterbury, and Victoria University Wellington, as well as Beca and MetService.
The programme aims to provide benefits to New Zealand including:
Deliver excellence: Produce excellent, cutting-edge, dynamic and paradigm-shifting data science research community
Grow capability: Grow the scale, depth, excellence and impact of New Zealand's data science research community
Leverage collaboration: Foster and grow international and national collaborations.
Give effect to the Vision Matauranga policy. Find out more below.
What we do
As part of our efforts to make environmental data more accessible for everyone, TAIAO provides the following:
Tools for analysing data
Platform for organising and accessing data
Communication and Dissemination
Datasets
TAIAO recognises the importance of data int this space, which is why we continue to provide easy access to large datasets with spatial and temporal resolution. There are datasets which are already available, with more on the way. All TAIAO datasets are free to use and well‑suited for research, modelling, and data‑science challenges used for data science challenges.
Vision Mātauranga
TAIAO aims to provide a pathway towards our Vision Mātauranga theme: "Achieving Environmental Sustainability through Iwi and Hapū relationships with Land and Sea".
Through this work, we will be able to provided accessible capability and access to big datasets that allow iwi groups and researchers to improve the ability to manage environmental conditions in relevant iwi whenua.
Vision Mātauranga is guided by the principle of co-governance where we work alongside iwi to build Māori data science capacity and capability.
